ADOPTED CHILDREN TRANSITIONING INTO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

HELPFUL LEARNING LINKS AND ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES.

FUNNY FACT: There are NOT skunks in Ukraine!

One of our adopted kids asked what would happen if they snuck a skunk into the school? Would the school shut down for the day? Would they get in trouble or get expelled? We may have told them that if they could successfully catch a wild skunk and avoid getting sprayed, they could totally take a skunk to school.

What an exciting and yet also overwhelming time transitioning can be for children learning a new language! While complete immersion is the fastest way to begin that transition, we also used a translation app the first three months and only on very serious/safety related topics after that.

Talking in broken down, fragmented sentences also helped our adopted children (regardless of age) learn quickly. Short and to the point sentence structure. Although it may seem unnatural, it was very helpful to their comprehension retention.

Each of our adopted children have transitioned differently and it wasn't any different with their education.

We have enrolled our children immediately to their grade level, decided to retain them a grade level and also held off a year before even enrolling them in school because they were slow to language and bonding.

Every child learns and transitions differently and you need to make a decision that will best help them long term.
